Ensure clean water, sanitary toilets, and proper waste disposal.
These were the tips health authorities gave residents of Visayas and
Mindanao who were evacuated from their homes due to Typhoon Pablo
(Bopha).
"Evacuation center essentials: 1)
adequate, clean water 2) sanitary toilets 3) proper waste disposal 4)
meals 5) medicines," National Epidemiology Center head Enrique Tayag
said on his Twitter account.
Tayag also advised evacuees to have hygiene kits that make water safe to drink.
He advised them to filter water from the faucet using cheesecloth; and boil or add chlorine to disinfect.
But Tayag also appealed to residents in affected areas to heed evacuation orders as Typhoon Pablo hits Mindanao.
"Keep children safe. Drowning has killed more people during heavy flooding," he added.
Typhoon Pablo made landfall over Davao Oriental at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, even as disaster management officials said power was cut off in parts of Mindanao before dawn Tuesday.
As of 6 a.m., the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said at least 8,283 families or 41,608 people from Eastern Visayas and Regions 10, 11 and 13 had been affected.
The NDRRMC said 972 evacuation centers had been set up, including at
least 60 that can accommodate 14,170 families in Iligan City. —KG, GMA News
