Make room, Facebook. You too, Google+. Here comes Microsoft with its own social network, Socl.
Visitors who want to try it out can log on to beta.so.cl, where they
can post items about their interests and search for people.
"Socl — pronounced social — allows you to express and share your ideas
through rich post collages comprised of images, links, captions and
videos," So.cl said in its About page.
It said Socl is a research project from Microsoft Research FUSE Labs
and began as an experiment in social search, targeting students for the
purpose of learning.
Socl has since evolved to
be a service "where people connect over shared interests expressed
through beautiful posts that take only seconds to create," Microsoft
said
Microsoft stressed Socl does not compete
with other social networks like Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Bing, or
Google, saying Socl is an experimental research project with a minimal
set of features "that combine social networking and search for the
purpose of enabling people to express and share ideas through rich
visual collages, organized by interests."
Users can sign in with their Facebook or Microsoft accounts.
A separate article on Mashable said Socl initially launched last May as "a search-meets-social networking website."
It said users simply connect their account with Socl and can then start sharing content and comment on other members' posts.
But it said Socl's "forever-scrolling" front page, which shows posts from all users, can feel a bit random.
"Overall, Socl is a solid time-waster at this point. As more people
join, the site should become more usable, but the question is: With all
the social networks and content-sharing sites around, will Socl ever
reach critical mass?" it said.— TJD, GMA News
