To discuss and define the role of catholic universities in the context of a post-modern world, the Association of Catholic Universities of the Philippines (ACUP) will meet from Jan. 9 to 11, 2013 at the University of San Carlos (USC), Cebu City. It will coincide with the organization’s celebration of its 40th year taking place also in the same year that the Catholic Church commemorates the “Year of Faith.”
With a theme focusing on ”Christian Witnessing and the Postmodern World ACUP@40: Celebrating the Year of Faith”, presidents, administrators and religious education coordinators/Theology department chairs from the 28 member universities will converge to revisit the identity and mission of Catholic universities in the contemporary world. Spearheading the event is Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P. acting president of ACUP and rector of the University of Santo Tomas while the University of San Carlos (USC) will host the event which will be facilitated by USC President Rev. Fr. Dionisio M. Miranda, S.V.D.
The highlight of the Opening Ceremonies on January 9 is a Eucharistic Celebration at the Archdiocesan Shrine of San Pedro Calungsod with Msgr. Ildebrando Leyson, Rector of the Shrine of San Pedro Calungsod , as the the main celebrant and homilist. Rev. Fr. Dionisio Miranda, S.V.D. will deliver the Welcome Remarks before the start of the Opening Dinner.
On January 10, Most. Rev. Arch. Jose Serofia Palma, D.D, Ph.D, Archbishop of Cebu and President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines will deliver the keynote address, “Catholic Universities’ Response to the Challenges of the 21st Century”.
Other speakers are: Rev. Fr. Daniel Franklin Pelario, C.M., dean of St. Vincent School of Theology, Adamson University who will talk about “Towards a Christian Spirituality in a Postmodern World” while Bro. Ricardo Laguda, F.S.C., president of De La Salle University will expound on “Education: Teaching and Learning in a Digital World.”
The second day of the conference revolves around “The Role of Catholic Universities in Public Debate vis-à-vis Issues Confronting the Philippine Church and Society Today” which will be divided into three topics to be discussed by resource speakers. The issues that will be given focus on are: Election Watch/Responsible Voting by Ms. Higinia V. Rodriguez ; Overseas Filipino Workers by Mr. Jeremaiah Opiniano of UST and the topic on Graft and Corruption by Rev. Fr. Albert Alejos S.J. of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University. Msgr. Gerry Santos will discuss Religious Education with administrators and religious education coordinators/Theology department chairs from ACUP member universities while the presidents of the ACUP member universities will meet and plan for the association.
Culminating the three-day conference is the workshop on “Christian Witnessing in a Postmodern World through Education , Research and Advocacy”, which will be followed by the presentation of workshop outputs and formulation of ACUP’s Agenda for the next two years.
