he number of revelry-related injuries since Dec. 21 last year jumped to 697 as of Wednesday morning, according to the Department of Health (DOH).
National Epidemiology Center head Dr. Enrique Tayag said as of 6 a.m. Wednesday, the injuries numbered 697 — 29 percent lower than the same period last year.
"As of 6 a.m. Jan. 2, the total firework-related injuries reached 697 versus 984 last year or 29-percent reduction," Tayag said on his Twitter account.
Of the total number, 675 were caused by fireworks, 20 by stray bullets and two by firework ingestion, he added.
On Tuesday, Tayag said they recorded 413 revelry-related injuries: 404 from fireworks, eight from stray bullets, and one from firework ingestion.
He said this was lower than the 498 during the same period last year. Last year's 498 injuries included 476 from fireworks, 18 from stray bullets and four from fireworks ingestion.
The DOH has been discouraging Filipinos from using firecrackers to welcome the New Year, citing its harmful effects on health and the environment.
DOH Secretary Enrique Ona had earlier said he plans to talk with stakeholders, including law enforcers and firecracker manufacturers, to map out plans on how to minimize firecracker casualties.
Ona said one of the things he is considering is to ban youths from buying fireworks. — KBK, GMA News
