Police: 7 killed in Negros Occidental ambush

A policeman and at least six barangay police personnel were killed early Sunday in an ambush in La Castellana town, Negros Occidental.

PO1 Jurie Gan Jr. of the La Castellana police said the victims were on their way back to headquarters when armed men opened fire on them.

"Kaninang umaga pauwi na sana nang tambagnan sila," Gan said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Gan said sketchy initial reports identified the slain policeman as PO1 Richard Canha.

He cited initial information indicating the incident occurred in Barangay Cabacungan.

Gan said the ambush victims had included three police personnel and 30 members of the barangay police .

When asked if the perpetrators were from the communist New People's Army, he said, "Hindi namin alam kung sila ba (it was not certain at this time)," he said. — LBG, GMA News
