The weather in Metro Manila and some parts of Luzon may remain warm in the next few days due to a weakened northeast monsoon, state weather forecasters said Tuesday.
In a radio interview, PAGASA forecaster Manny Mendoza said this is due partly to the weakening of a high-pressure area near China and Siberia.
Weak monsoon
"Medyo mahina ang northeast monsoon, (humina) ang high-pressure area sa China at Siberia," Mendoza said in an interview on dzBB radio.
"Medyo mahina ang northeast monsoon, (humina) ang high-pressure area sa China at Siberia," Mendoza said in an interview on dzBB radio.
He said the lowest temperature recorded in Metro Manila Monday was at 22 degrees Celsius as of 5 a.m.
Earlier this month, the lowest temperature in Metro Manila had been recorded at 18.1 degrees Celsius.
But, according to GMA resident meteorologist Nathaniel "Mang Tani" Cruz, the monsoon is also expected to bring light rains to parts of Luzon.
"The northeast monsoon continues to bring light rains over the northern and eastern sections of Luzon, while light to moderate rainshowers or thunderstorms are expected in eastern Visayas and Mindanao due to a tail end of a cold front. The western section of Luzon will continue to enjoy almost clear skies while the rest of Visayas and southern Luzon will be partly cloudy with possible rainshowers," he said.
"Rough to very rough sea conditions remain over the seaboards of northern Luzon and eastern seaboards of central and southern Luzon. It will remain partly cloudy with a slight 20 to 30 percent chance of light rains in Metro Manila today," he added.
Light rain over eastern Visayas, Mindanao
In its 5 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said light rain showers and thunderstorms may fall over parts of Eastern Visayas and Mindanao due to the tail-end of a cold front affecting Eastern Visayas.
PAGASA also said the northeast monsoon is affecting Luzon.
"Eastern Visayas and Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rain showers or thunderstorms," it said.
Also, it said Cagayan Valley and Aurora and Quezon provinces will have cloudy skies with light rain.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy with brief light rain.
Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough.
Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northeast to north with slight to moderate seas.
Gale warning
PAGASA also said strong to gale-force winds associated with the northeast monsoon may affect the seaboards of Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Central and Southern Luzon.
"Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," it said. — TJD, GMA News
