(Updated 11:30 a.m.) A magnitude-5.4 quake was recorded on Thursday morning off the coast of Baler town in Aurora and was felt in parts of Metro Manila and Luzon.
On its Twitter account, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the epicenter of the earthquake was located 17 kilomers northeast of Baler. It had a depth of five kilometers.
The PHIVOLCS initially said that the quake's epicenter was recorded 84 kilometers northeast of Jomalig town in Quezon province.
The United States Geological Survey meanwhile said the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.3, with the epicenter located 19 kilometers east northeast of Baler, Aurora.
Ishmael Narag of PHIVOLCS' seismology division meanwhile said the earthquake was also felt at Intensity III in Quezon City, Mandaluyong City and along Roxas Boulevard, which traverses Manila and ParaƱaque City. He added that the quake was also felt at Intensity II in Tarlac, and Intensity I in Makati City.
An Agence France-Presse report quoted Eunice Fernando, a Manila Hotel staff member, as saying that "they were jolted by the quake but guests did not panic."
"The chandeliers swayed and rattled, and we were a little scared," Fernando told AFP, adding they did not advise guests to evacuate.
PHIVOLCS director Renato Solidum Jr., for his part, explained that the earthquake is considered only "moderate" in terms of magnitude, but was felt in many areas because its epicenter was shallow.
On its Facebook page, the PHIVOLCS also said that the earthquake was felt at Intensity V in Baler, Intensity IV in Cabiao town in Nueva Ecija, Intensity III in Cauayan City in Isabela and Intensity II in parts of Bulacan and Tarlac. — with Andreo Calonzo and Agence France-Presse/RSJ/TJD, GMA News
