Close to 6,000 Filipinos have now been displaced by the Sabah crisis, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Wednesday.

According to the council's latest report, 5,692 have been displaced by the clashes, of which 2,951 adults and 2,107 children have been validated. The remaining 634 are still undergoing the validation process.

The displaced persons were evacuated to Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi.

The crisis in Sabah began when followers of Sulu sultan Jamalul Kiram III began a three-week standoff with local authorities in February. Since violence between the two sides erupted on March 1 and 2, Malaysian security forces have been on the offensive against the Kiram gunmen.

One-stop shop processing center

Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said the government's Crisis Management Committee team left Zamboanga City for Taganak in Turtle Island in Tawi-Tawi to set up a one-stop shop processing center in anticipation of the arrival of around 10,000 displaced Filipinos.
