The Philippines is on track to meet its target of having 5.5 million tourists this year after the country consistently posted over 400,000 visitor arrivals each month during the first quarter of 2013, MalacaƱang said.

At a press briefing on Thursday, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said that for the first time in Philippine history, the country was able to post this volume of visitor arrivals for three consecutive months in the same year.

"We would like to commend Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez for his aggressive role in making the Philippines more fun to visit," Lacierda said.

He added that visitor arrivals in the country for the first three months of 2013 reached over 1.27 million-- a 10.76-percent increase from figures recorded same time last year.

Koreans remain to be the Philippines' leading visitor market from January to March this year, a separate statement from the Department of Tourism (DOT) said. The Korean market rose by 23.93 percent during this period, according to the agency.

Last year, the Tourism Department launched a new campaign to attract tourists to the country dubbed "It's more fun in the Philippines." The new slogan became viral over the internet, and the tourism department has since launched various television ads to promote the campaign. — Andreo Calonzo/RSJ, GMA News
