Palawan has been named the best island for travelers in the “2013 World’s Best” put out by Travel+Leisure magazine Tuesday.
The island province in Southern Luzon was included in the list only this year, pushing Boracay, which previously topped the rankings, to second place.
Palawan had a score of 95.04 points and Boracay got 93.58 points based on a survey of the magazine’s readers from December 2012 to April 2013.
Respondents have been asked to rate islands based on natural attractions, and beaches as wells as activities, food and people.
Palawan in 2012 grabbed global attention after the Puerto Princesa Underground River was named one of the new seven wonders of nature.
The subterranean river, a national park, has also been named a protected wetland last year, under an international convention.
In 1999, the river has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It joined Palawan’s Tubbataha Reef, which gained the UN recognition in 1993.
Palawan and Boracay beat other world-famous islands in the list, even those that are already in Travel+Leisure’s hall of fame.
The island of Maui in Hawaii ranked third this year, followed by Santorini in Greece and Prince Edward Island in Canada.
Rounding out the top 10 were Bali in Indonesia, Kauai in Hawaii, Sicily in Italy, Koh Samui in Thailand and the Galapagos in Ecuador. Yahoo!
