Many times I've heard a parent say " I can help my child in any way, but don't laugh I can't do Math." I think for a minute before I say, Let's look at this another way, Have you ever said, "wait a minute, Here's a box with four things in it," Let's take a turns; you first then me." helped your child count branches on a tree? then your on the right path, Don't laugh - that's math! Have you ever taught your child left and right? counted her toes in bed at night? Repeated his favorite nursery rhyme? said good night just one more time?have you ever split a cookie right in half? formed a pattern on a snowy path? well, don't laugh - that's Math! have you ever played a game? measured for a picture frame? have you cut chains for your Christmas Trees? noticed a butterfly's wings have symmetry? Did you ever check the miles into town?Have counted stairs both up and down?
Did you ever measure  to see how tall? Find the weight of her favorite doll? well, don't laugh - that's math! Math can be  seen everything, Even in the songs we sing. Math isn't just adding and subtracting, Multiplying, dividing, or even protracting, Math exists all around us: we didn't find it - it found us! Now remember , when my little poem is done, If it have given you a small fraction of fun, Don't laugh - that's Math!

Just a Line

Just call me line,
Taking my time,
Really got no place to go...
Can't turn left,
Can't turn right,
No stopping or ending you know...
I wish I could stop,
I know I can't,
I stretch to infinity...
Cars can stop,
Trucks can stop,
But stopping,
Wouldn't be me...
Just call me
line,
Taking my time,
Really have no place to go...
Right now, I'm here,
Tomorrow, I'm there,
The next day?
I never do know.

The Lost Integer
Signed numbers on the number line

A tiny, little integer,
Lost on the number line,
Couldn't find her way back home,
No matter where she climbed...
She was number,

Negative 3,
And searching for her place,
On the massive number line,
She had to find home base...
She pestered positive,
Integer
6,
To tell her where to start,
He told her
0,
Knew the answer,
He was really smart...

Negative 3,
Asked the zero,
Sitting in the middle,
He gave an answer,
To the
 3,
That solved her little riddle...
Pointing to the right,
right arrow
Positives can play,
Negatives numbers,
To my left,
Each and every day...
left arrow

Calculator

My calculator,
Pal-culator,
Solves my hardest math!
Calculator,
Pal-culator,
Amazingly real fast!
Calculator,
Pal-culator,
Youre always by my side,
I really couldn't,
Do my math,
If your batteries died...

Rhombus

When daddy asked to marry mom,
Mom asked him for a ring,
So daddy rushed,
To the store,
And bought her some weird thing!
Mommy opened little box,
And much to her surprise,
She found a ring that was a square,
And tears came to her eyes…

But square rings can be special,
My dad told mom with pride,
A rhombus is real special,
And he turned square on its side…
A rhombus is a diamond,
At least it is, I think,
I know it’s parallelogram,
Like our kitchen sink!
My mom was filled with joy,
She laughed a silly laugh,
I’ll marry you today,
You're so good at math!

A rhombus is a quadrilateral with four equal length sides.
A square is a rhombus that has 4 equal angles and 4 equal length sides
Every rhombus is a parallelogram.
Unlike the 'rhombus ring' in this poem, not all diamond shaped objects are rhombuses. The term diamond is sometimes used to describe shapes even if they don’t have equal length sides.

Math Challenges
If a rhombus has an angle of 60 degrees, what are the measures of all 4 angles of the rhombus?
Can a rectangle (with 2 sides of different lengths) be a rhombus?
