loQal - House Bill 4753, or “Kasambahay (Househelp) Christmas Bonus Act of 2010”, aims to improve the plight of household helpers by mandating a 13th month pay from employers.

Pinoys earning a living as local household workers will soon have a fixed salary of P2,500 per month.

This, after the bicameral conference committee agreed on the monthly minimum wage rate for domestic workers before passing the Kasambahay Bills after midnight on Tuesday.

"The minimum wage for domestic workers as stated in Article 143 of the Labor Code is pegged at P800 in Metro Manila and highly urbanized cities," Senate President Pro Tempore Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada said.

Estrada, who chairs of Senate Committee on Labor, Employment and Human Resources Development, explained that the bill's approval will increase rates stipulated in the Labor Code.

Household workers currently receive monthly salary of P650 in other chartered cities and first-class municipalities, and P550 for other municipalities, Estrada said.

But Estrada clarified the P2,500 minimum monthly wage will only be applicable to kasambahays working in Metro Manila.

He assured, however, that the new measure seeks to raise the wages of domestic helpers in chartered cities and first-class communities to at least P2,000 monthly and in municipalities to at least P1,500 a month.
