Philippine officials are hoping for a miracle for the Filipino worker was still missing more than 48 hours after an oil platform explosion in the Gulf of Mexico.

Ambassador Jose Cuisia Jr. said the Philippine Embassy has not given up hope for the Filipino worker in the incident that left at least one Filipino dead and four others seriously injured.

The Philippine Embassy to Washington has identified the fatality as Elroy Corporal.

“We know that it has been more than 48 hours but we Filipinos always believe in miracles and we continue to pray that our other kababayan will be found alive,” Cuisia said as the search for the missing Filipino entered its third day.

He said that while the US Coast Guard has called off its search, Black Elk Energy, the owner of the ill-fated platform, is still pushing through with its search.

So far, he said Black Elk dispatched at least two vessels and several divers to continue the search for the Filipino, whose name has so far not been made public.

The embassy noted the divers are from the same team that recovered Corporal’s body.

Repatriation

Cuisia said the remains of Corporal, 42, were brought to New Orleans and will be readied for repatriation to the Philippines after an autopsy by authorities on Monday.

He contacted Corporal’s widow, Mary Jean, in Iligan City to extend his sympathy and to offer assistance to her and her two children.

The Embassy also said Philippine consular officials are now in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to attend to the remains of Corporal and to look into how the Philippine government could assist the four Filipinos being treated there.

Two of the four remain in critical condition at the hospital’s Regional Burn Unit while another is in serious condition.

A fourth worker, Wilberto Ilagan, is conscious and in fair condition.

Ilagan, who suffered burns in 35 percent of his body, had asked doctors to inform his family in the Philippines that he is alive and well. KBK, GMA News
