Ready or not, classes may have to resume in January for students in areas hit hard by Tropical Cyclone Pablo (Bopha), the Department of Education said.

DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro said students in some 445 schools may have to attend classes in tents, radio dzBB reported Monday.

For now, Luistro said the students in the affected areas will undergo stress debriefing.

The report cited DepEd figures indicating at least 877 classrooms in the affected areas were washed out, half of them in Baganga town in Davao Oriental.

In Compostela Valley, another area hit hard by Pablo, as much as 95 percent of schools were destroyed, the report added.

Luistro said resuming classes early would help the students recover from their loss.

Water supply, graves

A separate dzBB report said the Department of Health is working to address the problems plaguing the water supply in three villages in Cateel in Davao Oriental.

This was after the water supply in three villages were found positive for E. coli bacteria, which may cause diarrhea.

At least 27 of 30 patients at the Cateel District Hospital were diagnosed with diarrhea.

The DOH is to send chlorine solution and health supplies to the affected villages.

Meanwhile, residents in New Bataan in Compostela valley are digging graves for their dead, after the DOH rejected the idea of a mass grave for those who died.
