The father of slain young car dealer Venson Evangelista may have forgiven one of the suspects in his son's murder, but he still won't drop the charges against him and his accomplices.
Venson's father, Arsenio, said during an interview with News To Go anchor Howie Severino he will not drop the case against Joel Jacinto, a suspected member of the Dominguez carjacking group who was apprehended by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation on Thursday.
"May remorse [siya so] pinatatawad ko siya pero may batas ng tao na kailangan niyang harapin," Arsenio said.
Evangelista disappeared on Jan. 13, 2011 after accompanying some suspects who pretended to be buyers of his Land Cruiser for a test drive. He was found brutally killed in Cabanatuan City in Nueva Ecija days later.
Jacinto, a.k.a. Mekaniko and Eduardo Fernandez, was the subject of an arrest warrant issued by the Quezon City court handling the Evangelista carjacking and slay case.
Arsenio said that after Jacinto was arrested, he asked that they be allowed to face each other.
"Talagang nag-request din ako na gusto ko rin makaharap ko [yung] isa sa pumatay at nagsunog sa anak ko...gusto ko lang siya makaharap. Gusto ko lang ipaliwanag niya bakit kailangan nilang pumatay," he said.
"Ayan yung pinatay mo, sinunog ninyo yan o, batang-bata. Isa ka sa nagbuhat kay Venson, nilagay mo sa likod tinutukan mo, ikaw ang tumutok. Di ka ba nakokonsensya?" he told Jacinto.
He said Jacinto showed remorse and said that he himself has five children, but Venson's father said his son had two children too.
"Practically, ninakawan nila yung mga bata ng kanilang ama na mag-aaruga sa kanila. Tumulo luha niya, nakayuko siya, nag-aapologize siya," he said.
But Jacinto, in a separate interview, said that he was not involved in the killing itself.
"Nag-usap na kami ni Mr. Evangelista...naintindihan naman niya. Humingi
rin ako ng tawad sa kanya, yun lang naman ang tanging kasalanan ko sa
kanya na ako ang nagmaneho ng sasakyan nila," he said.
Evalengista, however, said he was very happy with Jacinto's capture
because all the suspects in his son's murder have finally been
apprehended.
"Happy day kami ngayon,
masayang-masaya kami not only for Venson but the rest of the victims of
the Dominguez Carnapping Group," he said.
He also expressed confidence in their case against the suspects but lamented the slow pace of the trial.
"Yung case is very strong napakalakas ng kaso namin especially all
tinuturo nila yung Dominguez brothers in particularly si Raymond
Dominguez ang nag-utos para patayin na at sunugin si Venson," he said.
"[Pero] nakakalungkot dito ang kaso namin after one year and 11 months
to be exact ...nasa pre-trial palang...ito ang present criminal justice
sa ating bansa," he added.
But he praised
National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Leonardo Espina, who
headed the Philippine National Police – Highway Patrol Group, for being
able to reduce the carnapping cases in the country.
"Nung pumasok si Gen. Espina sa Highway Patrol Group naibaba niya ng 50
percent yung cases of carnapping talaga all over...ang laki ng effort
niyan ginawa dito. Nacontrol niya yung sa Central Visayas, Mindanao
areas," he said. — with Kimberly Jane Tan/RSJ, GMA News
