The Philippines and Britain on Tuesday signed an air service agreement to boost trade, travel, and airline business.
Member of Parliament Hugo Swire told a forum staged by the Makati
Business Club and the Management Association of the Philippines he
signed the pact on Tuesday with Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio
Aguinaldo Abaya.
"I expect that our new visa services will lead to many more visitors traveling between our countries,” said Swire.
“To help bring this about, I will sign a new air services agreement
later today with Secretary Abaya, and meet Ramon Ang and Philippine
Airlines, who hope to start direct flights to London soon,” Swire told
businessmen before signing the agreement.
Civil
Aeronautics Board executive director Carmelo Arcilla said the
Philippines and UK tried make a new a new air service agreement in 2009 –
to upgrade a 1965 agreement – but the pact was not signed.
The details of the new deal, including flight frequencies, would soon
be finalized. “It’s a comprehensive agreement that defines the aviation
relationship of two parties,” Arcilla noted. — VS, GMA News
