He blessed as he clicked.

Pope Benedict XVI on Wednesday evening (Manila time) offered his blessings to some 673,000 of his online followers as he issued his first tweet from his official Twitter account.

In his tweet, Benedict XVI also expressed his gratitude to all those following him even before he composed his first tweet.

"Dear friends, I am pleased to get in touch with you through Twitter. Thank you for your generous response. I bless all of you from my heart," he said.

The time stamp of his tweet was 6:28 p.m.

As of 6:54 p.m. Manila time, Benedict XVI's Twitter account has 673,133 followers.

In late November, the Vatican had said Pope Benedict XVI is joining the twitterverse in December.

"The Pope has already used the 140 character 'tweet' format when, in June 2011, he launched the Vatican information portal www.news.va., with the words: 'Dear friends, I just launched News.va. Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI,'" it noted.

But a separate report on Fox News Latino had also cited sources who said it is unlikely Benedict XVI himself will write the tweets, though he will approve them before they are posted. -- HS, GMA News
