In an article posted on its website Monday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said the award came from the Shanghai Morning Post.

"More and more Chinese are traveling to the Philippines especially during this winter season in China and for the upcoming week-long Chinese New Year holiday in February," it noted.

Philippine Consul General Charles Jose received the award presented by Liu Sha, the publication's editor-in-chief, it said.

With Jose at the awarding ceremony at the Shanghai Peninsula Hotel by the Bund last Jan. 15 was Niel Ballesteros of the Philippine Tourism Office in Shanghai.

Other winners included:

  • Australia as The Best Tour Destination for Discovery;
  • Switzerland as The Best Shopping Paradise;
  • Korea as The Best Skiing Destination; and
  • Germany as The Best Destination for Art Appreciation.

Last Jan. 9, the Philippines was named one of the recipients of the “Best Tourist Destination” awards at the annual World Travel-Special Trips Awards given by the Oriental Morning Post.

On the other hand, the DFA noted several Philippine carriers have resumed flight services from China to the Philippines to serve Chinese travelers looking for short-haul beach holidays.

AirPhil Express reactivated its chartered flight service from Shanghai to Kalibo last November 30 while Zest Air added more flights from Shanghai to Manila last month.

"The regular multiple flight services to Manila continue to run steadily out of Beijing, Shanghai, Xiamen, Jinjiang and Guangzhou," the DFA said.

More romantic in PHL

Meanwhile, a new TV commercial entitled “Lovers” released by the Department of Tourism highlights how romantic the country can be.

"Melt your heart out :) ... Spread the love! #itsmorefuninthephilippines" the DOT, which posted the 31-second ad on its YouTube channel on Thurday, said on its Twitter account

A note on the YouTube video indicated the ad is for international release to show "the momentous activities one can have in any of (the Philippines') shores." —KG, GMA News
