At least 17 Filipino youths have volunteered to help organizers prepare for the upcoming World Youth Day (WYD) in Brazil in July.
The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Youth said the volunteers are from different parts the Philippines and will go to Rio de Janeiro.
“(T)hese young Filipinos will not join the WYD as a participant but as volunteers who would be given different tasks such as signage-bearers, secretariat staff, runners, liturgy coordinators, in support to the WYD team in Brazil,” ECY executive secretary Fr. Conegundo Garganta said in an interview with YouthPinoy.
Garganta also said the volunteers will be shouldering their own registration and participation costs like ordinary pilgrims.
YouthPinoy said an orientation meeting for the volunteers was held last March 10 at the CBCP headquarters in Intramuros, Manila.
According to Garganta, the WYD international volunteers from the Philippines will go to Rio de Janeiro July 15, while the WYD international pilgrims go to other dioceses outside of the host diocese for the Missionary Week.
The 27th WYD is scheduled July 17 to 28 in Brazil, with the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro as the host diocese.
211 apply for delegation
Meanwhile, YouthPinoy at least 211 people have applied to be part of the ECY-Philippines delegation to the WYD.
The ECY had postponed deadline for submitting credentials from February 28 to April 15.
“We have decided to accommodate those who have expressed interest to comply with the requirements, hence the extension,” Garganta said.
Aside from the ECY, other dioceses have organized their own WYD delegations. - VVP, GMA News
