As the campaign period for local elections officially begins on Holy Saturday, solemnity is expected to give way to the din of various campaign jingles and sweet promises of political candidates for the May 13 polls.
Up for grabs in the local elections, according to various reports, are:
- 233 House of Representatives posts,
- 80 seats for both the positions of governors and vice governors;
- 766 provincial board members seats,
- 143 slots for city mayor and city vice mayor;
- 1,491 for both municipal mayor and municipal vice mayor posts;
- 1,598 city councilor seats; and
- 11,932 posts for municipal councilors.
The campaign period for local candidates was supposed to start on Good Friday; however, campaigning on that day as well as on Maundy Thursday is prohibited, according to Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution 9385, which lists the campaign period's schedule of activities.
Republic Act 7166 also states that the campaign period may exclude the day before Election Day, the day of the election itself (in this year's case on May 13), Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday.
National candidates, or senatorial and party-list candidates, are also expected to resume their campaigning once more on Saturday. Their campaign period already started on February 12. - Gian C. Geronimo, VVP, GMA News
