A magnitude 4.4 quake was felt in Metro Manila and nearby provinces Wednesday evening, state seismologists said.
According
to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs),
the quake was tectonic in origin and was felt in the following areas:
Intensity III: Labo, Camarines Norte; Infanta, Quezon; Quezon City; Arayat, Pampanga Intensity II: Makati City; Taguig City; Muntinlupa City; Pasay City; Antipolo City; San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan Intensity I: Caloocan City
The US Geological Survey, meanwhile, said on its website
that the earthquake had a 4.9 magnitude with its epicenter traced to 9
kilometers off the eastern coast of Burdeos municipality in Polillo
Island in Quezon province.
Source: PhivolcsThe Phivolcs on its website said the quake's epicenter was traced to 40 km northeast off the coast of Polillo.
Interviewed
on "24 Oras," Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said few aftershocks
were to be expected from the quake and that these should not alarm the
public.
"Hindi naman tayo umaasa ng maraming aftershocks sa
ganitong klaseng lindol," he said, adding no damage was reported due to
the quake.
"Kung ganito po ang intensity, hindi naman po ito nakakapinsala," he said,
He said the quake was brought about by moving tectonic plates underwater. "Ang naramdaman po rito ay... parang pag-dribble."
Solidum
also said the quake was not strong enough to cause a tsunami.
"Katatamtaman lang at hindi masyadong malaki para makapagpagalaw ng
tubig," he said.
The tremor immediately caused a buzz among Filipino netizens. — Marc Jayson Cayabyab/KBK,GMA NEWS
