Poor visibility limits status observations
The aft part of the "MOL Comfort" as of 11 p.m. JST (6 p.m. Dubai time) on June 19 was drifting near 13'00"N 61'29"E in an east-northeast direction. The status of the fore part was to be confirmed while the visibility is limited due to adverse weather. The patrol boat which has departed Port of Jebel Ali, U.A.E. on June 19, was now expected to arrive at the ocean site on June 24. Some of the containers might be lost or damaged during the incident, but majority of the cargo were confirmed to be aboard the aft part. The status of the fore part was to be confirmed. MOL has contracted with a salvage company and was proceeding to rescue the cargo and hull. Two salvage companies, the Dutch company Smit and Nippon Salvage, have dispatched ships to search the "MOL Comfort" but will reach the site only during the next weekend. Damage will in any case be enormous. The insurance value of the cargo on board the vessel was estimated to be at least 300 million dollars. The salvage costs may be 30 - 70 % of the cargo value. The ship had been destined for Rotterdam with 4382 containers on board with an ETA of June 30.
