Malacañang on Monday assured the public that Aman Futures, Inc. owner
Manuel Amalilio will be repatriated to face charges filed against him by
thousands of victims of his company’s pyramid scam.
“What happened last Friday was a mere temporary setback. We are in the process of bringing Mr. Amalilio back into the Philippines,” Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a briefing.
“Ito pong pagkabinbin lang sa pagpapabalik kay Ginoong Amalilio ay, sinasabi nga ni Secretary Leila de Lima, temporary lang. We are confident that, with the coordination of our Malaysian counterparts, we will be able to bring back Mr. Amalilio,” Lacierda added.
Amalilio, escorted by National Bureau of Investigation agents, was set to fly from Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia to the Philippines Friday when immigration officials stopped him over alleged issues of his citizenship.
But Lacierda denied reports that Amalilio is Malaysian, insisting that the Department of Justice has the proper paperwork to prove that Amalilio, who is set to face charges for allegedly swindling thousands of residents of Pagadian and other cities in Mindanao and the Visayas of their hard-earned money, is Filipino.
“We made sure that when we were there, that we would have all the documentary proofs that Mr. Amalilio is a Filipino citizen,” Lacierda said.
Lacierda also assured the scam victims that Malaysian authorities will be cooperating with the case, citing a treaty the Philippines has with Malaysia.
“We have a mutual legal assistance mechanism with Malaysia,” Lacierda said, saying he does not foresee President Benigno Aquino having to call Malaysian authorities.
“We have a very good working relationship with our Malaysian counterparts. We don’t see that as a problem,” he added. — BM, GMA News
