The Department of Tourism on Thursday joined the list of government agencies that canceled their Christmas parties to show solidarity with the victims of Typhoon Pablo (Bopha).

In a post on its Twitter account, the DOT said Filipinos should instead remember the values of charity and generosity by sharing prayers and blessings with the victims.

"In light of the recent events and in solidarity with the rest of the nation, DOT has decided to cancel its Christmas party," it said.

"As we celebrate the Season, let us remember the values of charity and generosity by sharing our prayers and blessings with the victims of Pablo," it added.

Earlier, MalacaƱang offices canceled their Christmas parties and pledged to use the resources for assistance to Pablo's victims.

The Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines also canceled - or at least toned down - their Christmas parties in deference to the victims.

Even the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council had the Office of Civil Defense cancel their parties as well.

As of Thursday morning, the NDRRMC said Pablo had left at least 902 dead and more than P14 billion in damage. Over 600 people have remained missing.

The NDRRMC also said at least 635 remained missing and 2,661 were injured. — RSJ, GMA News
