As a farmer, Virgilio Penticase is used to early mornings and hard work.
This time, however, the 64-year-old from Tagbilaran, Bohol is getting up early for another reason: to attend junior high school.
Despite
his age and financial hardships, Penticase is determined to finish
school as a way out of illiteracy and ignorance, according to a report
on GMA News TV's Balitanghali.
He is not only determined to finish the K-to-12
basic education curriculum, but he would also like to fulfill his dream
of finishing a business and commerce course in college, the report said.
Right now, said Mang Virgilio, his favorite subject in 8th grade is Filipino.
In
support of its oldest student, the parent-teacher association at Dr.
Cecilio Putong National High School has provided him with school
materials and even a new pair of eyeglasses.
But when Mang Virgilio finishes his schooling some years from now, he will still be a younger college graduate than Pasencia Tamayo,
an 80-year-old grandmother from Lingayen, Pangasinan who graduated
earlier this year with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Her
major was Technology and Livelihood Education.
"Sabi ko, gusto ko mag-aral, gusto ko mag-continue ng college na kagaya niyo," she said. "Gusto ko din mag-aral, sabi ko."
She finished her schooling, she said, "for self-fulfillment."
And is there a better reason? — Amanda Fernandez/BM, GMA News
