A low-pressure area off Mindanao has dissipated but a new one now hovers near Eastern Visayas and threatens to trigger flash floods and landslides, state weather forecasters said Saturday afternoon.

PAGASA forecaster Glaiza Escollar said the new LPA and the northeast monsoon may bring rain to parts of the country in the next 24 hours.

"Ang LPA (sa may Mindanao), nalusaw na. Meron tayong na-monitor na bagong LPA," she said in an interview on dzBB radio.

PAGASA's 5 p.m. bulletin said that as of 4 p.m., the new LPA was estimated at 410 km east of Guiuan town in Eastern Samar.

It also said the northeast monsoon is affecting Luzon.

"Eastern Visayas will experience cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rain showers and thunderstorms which may trigger flash floods and landslides," it said.

Caraga, Northern Mindanao and Bicol and Davao regions will have light to moderate rain showers or thunderstorms.

Also, it said Cagayan Valley and Aurora and Quezon provinces will have cloudy skies with light rain.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy with brief light rain. — LBG, GMA News script type="text/javascript">
