"We are pleased to announce that President Aquino has approved the designation of Vice Admiral Jose Luis M. Alano as flag officer in command of the Philippine Navy," deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a text message.

Valte said Alano's appointment will take effect on December 21, when Pama reaches the mandatory retirement age of 56.

Alano was the leader of several important units in the Navy including the Philippine Fleet, Office of the Chief of Naval Staff, Naval Forces Northern Luzon, Service Force Command and Naval Air Group.

Valte said Aquino signed Alano's appointment papers last December 12.

Pama said Aquino made the right choice, describing Alano as "highly professional snd competent officer."

"The president made the right choice," Pama said. "He (Alano) is higly qualified, and competent and professional, well prepared for the job."

Aquino, in a chance interview with reporters in Pasay early Thursday, had hinted that he had chosen Pama’s replacement when he was asked about the impending retirement of Armed Forces chief General Jessie D. Dellosa.

Alano became commander of the Cebu City-based Central Command last September. Before that, he was the commander of the Philippine Fleet, one of the two major units of the Philippine Navy.

Born on May 1, 1958 in Quezon City, Alano also previously served as the Navy’s No. 3 man as Chief Naval Staff. He also previously commanded the Naval Forces Northern Luzon and the Service Force – a unit under the Philippine Fleet.

He is a recipient of various military medals and decorations, including Outstanding Achievement Medal, Naval Special Operations Badge, Distinguished Star, Gawad sa Kaunlaran Medal, and Category 1 at Sea Plague. — Patricia Denise Chiu/KBK, GMA News
